When the topic of the Eastern Catholic Churches comes up I am often confronted with blank looks or questions such as, "But are they Catholic?" Most Roman Catholics are unfamiliar with the Eastern Churches. They either have never even heard of them or only have an understanding that they exist. The article which I have linked to below is a very good primer on this topic and written by an Melkite Catholic who fully understands the Western Catholic ignorance, but is not hostile to it. I am also adding a chart below which shows the structure of all of the Rites and from where they originated.
