Don't Mess with an Archbishop who wears Kevlar!

Aren't you thankful that we live in a country where the government cannot tell religious groups what they can and cannot teach? Imagine if we lived in a nation where the government could tell the Catholic Church that they have to spend their money supporting things which the Catholic faith holds to be intrinsically immoral. Imagine if that same government silenced priests from speaking out against this policy or from even reading a letter to their congregation from the local bishop about the matter. We know the Church has often been silenced in communist and Muslim nations. But we live in the United States of America where the Constitution guarantees us these rights of freedom of speech and freedom of religion.

NO LONGER! By now you are familiar with the Obama Administrations HHS policy, mandating employers provide health coverage for contraception and sterilization (Click here  and here to read my two previous posts about HHS). Over the last two weeks, the majority of parishes across the united states have read letters or statements from their bishops about HHS. There was one exception. Catholic Chaplains of US Army Chapels were told that the letter from Archbishop Broglio (Archbishop of the US. Military Archdiocese) could not be read during Mass and could only be handed out afterword. The best that I can make out from available reports is that the letters were not read on the intended weekend. After some correspondence (and it is implied that there was a whole lot of legal posturing) between Archbishop Broglio and the Army's Office of the Chief of Chaplains, the Army agreed that it was a mistake to stop the reading of the letter.*

We are heading down a slippery slope folks!
